Brand strategy
before design
Brand strategy from Dubai: positioning, audience, architecture and messaging, decided and written down before anyone opens a design file.
Strategy is the part of a brand nobody sees and everybody feels. It decides what the design has to say.
Most rebrands start with a logo and work backwards, which is why so many end up looking new and saying nothing. We start with the decisions underneath: who you are for, what you offer that others do not, how your products and sub-brands relate, and the few things you will say again and again. The result is a short written strategy your leadership agrees on, and a brief any designer can work from.
For companies that need to agree on who they are before they decide how they look.
Founders preparing a launch or a raise, leadership teams after a merger or a pivot, and groups whose products have grown into a family nobody planned. The common thread is a brand that cannot be designed until a few hard choices are made.
- Every founder describes the company differently
- Your products and sub-brands have grown without a plan
- Customers choose you for reasons you have never written down
- A rebrand is coming and nobody can say what it should achieve
What a brand strategy engagement covers
Research and audit
Interviews with leadership, customers and the people who sell, a review of your current materials and a read of how competitors position themselves.
Positioning
The audience you serve first, the problem you solve for them, the alternative they would otherwise choose and the reason to pick you. One page, in plain words.
Brand architecture
How the company, its products and any sub-brands relate: one master brand, endorsed brands or a house of brands, with the naming rules that follow.
Messaging and personality
A messaging hierarchy, proof points for each claim and the personality traits that will guide tone of voice and visual direction later.
How we work
Listen
Interviews inside and outside the company. We look for where the story the founders tell differs from the one customers repeat.
Map
The category, the competitors and the space nobody has claimed, laid out so the choices are visible.
Decide
Workshops with leadership to choose a position and an architecture. We bring options and a recommendation, not a blank whiteboard.
Write it down
The strategy as a short document and a creative brief, ready to hand to an identity team, ours or yours.
What we believe about brand strategy
A strategy is a choice
If a position could describe any company in your category, it is not a position. Good strategy says who you are not for as clearly as who you are for.
Short enough to remember
A strategy nobody can recall in a meeting does not guide anything. We write it to fit on a page and be repeated without notes.
Built from customers, not slogans
The strongest positions are usually already in what your best customers say about you. We listen before we write.
What you walk away with
- A position the leadership team has agreed and can say in one sentence
- A clear structure for the company, its products and sub-brands
- A messaging hierarchy with proof behind every claim
- A creative brief that turns strategy into design decisions
- A shared basis for judging design work on something other than taste
Questions we are asked about brand strategy
What does brand strategy cost?
It depends on how many people we interview, how many brands sit under the company and how many markets you sell in. A single brand in one market is a smaller job than a group with several. We give a fixed fee once the scope is agreed.
How long does it take?
Four to six weeks for most companies, from first interview to the signed brief. A group with several brands or markets takes longer.
Can we do strategy without a new identity?
Yes. Many clients use the strategy to brief their own team or to steer a later refresh. If you do want an identity afterwards, the strategy becomes its brief.
Does the strategy cover Arabic-speaking audiences?
Where you sell in Arabic, yes. We interview customers in the markets that matter and write the messaging so it can be expressed in Arabic, not just translated from English.
What do you need from us?
Time with the founders or leadership, introductions to a handful of customers, and whatever research, sales material or plans you already have. Decisions get made in the workshops, so the people who can make them need to be there.
